A five-year-old boy from Syracuse, Utah was playing soccer with his friends when his mother recorded a little video of him. Nothing unusual about that, but that video eventually caught the attention of one of the biggest names in professional soccer. And what happened next gave this little boy an experience his family will never forget. His name is Hudson Droubay.
Although everybody calls him Huddy. Huddy was born with Down syndrome. And he's the youngest of five children. His older brothers played soccer, and when Huddy finally got his turn to join a local recreation team, his mother Melanie was there recording.
Now, according to Melanie, Huddy wasn't exactly dominating the soccer field. In fact, she wasn't even sure he kicked the ball, but he was having the time of his life. He ran around that field with the biggest smile on his face. Just thrilled to be out there playing with the other kids.
Melanie shared the video online, thinking friends and family might enjoy it. But something unexpected happened. People started sharing it. Before long, that little video had been viewed millions of times.
And one of the people who saw it was David Beckham. Yep, that David Beckham, one of the most recognizable soccer players in the world. Beckham left a comment about Huddy's wonderful smile, and that began an unexpected connection between him and the Droubay family. A few months later, Huddy received some signed soccer jerseys with his name on them.
And then, earlier this year, the family received another surprise: a personal invitation from Beckham to come to Miami and attend an Inter Miami soccer game. Well, last week, Huddy and his family made that trip, and the experience turned out to be even more special than they expected. When Huddy met Beckham, the two were wearing matching Inter Miami jerseys. But here's a little detail I especially enjoyed.
Huddy had his own nickname for David Beckham. He calls him Mr. David. Apparently that started when Huddy sang Happy Birthday to Beckham, calling him Mr.
David in the song. So Beckham even had Mr. David printed on the back of his jersey. The two exchanged signed jerseys, spent some time together, and went out onto the field to kick soccer balls around.
Just imagine being five years old and getting to play soccer with David Beckham. But Huddy's day wasn't finished. There was another surprise waiting for him. The family had been told they'd get to meet Beckham and watch the game.
What they didn't know was that Huddy had been invited to walk onto the field before the game. And the player he would be walking alongside? Lionel Messi, one of the greatest soccer players of all time. There's this little boy from Syracuse, Utah, walking out onto a professional soccer field with Lionel Messi.
And if you've seen the pictures, Huddy looks like he belongs right there. His mother said the entire experience meant more to her than she could put into words. But what really touched her wasn't just meeting famous athletes, it was the way they treated her son. She said she wants Huddy to grow up knowing that he belongs wherever he wants to be, and that having Down syndrome shouldn't limit the opportunities or happiness he experiences in life.
I think that's beautiful hope for any child. And I love the fact that this entire adventure began with a little boy simply enjoying a game of soccer. He wasn't trying to impress anybody. He was just being Huddy.
Apparently, that was more than enough to capture the attention of millions of people, including two of the biggest names in the sport. His mother says Huddy is pretty much the star of the show in their family. And everyone is perfectly happy with that arrangement. After seeing this story, I can understand why.
Congratulations, Huddy. I hope you keep enjoying every minute out there on the soccer field. And something tells me that smile of yours is going to keep people happy for a very long time. I'm Corey Moser, and that's something good Sunday.
